LYTTELTON.
The excitement in connection with the polling for the general election began early at Lyttelton, and as soon as the booths were opened at 9 a.m. a steady stream of voters flocked towards the Courthouse, the principal polling place, to record their votes. An additional booth had, on this occasion, been created at the Oddfellows' Hall, and was made use of chiefly by lady voters. it the Courthouse Mr E. M. Griffiths and his staff of assistants were kept busy throughout the day. The partisans of both candidates expressed confidence of getting their man in, but &b far as Lyttelton itself was concerned there was but little doubt that Mr Joyce would have a substantial majority. Late on Monday night the third candidate, Mr Douglass, retired from the contest. However, for the purposes of the poll he had not retired, and his name still remained on the ballot papers, and voters, in consequence, had to regard him as still being ia the field. This ariees from the fact that a candidate cannot retire except five clear days previous to the polling. day. A deal of good-humoured chaff was indulged in, but the town was very Orderly.
