M. Emile Zola, in contributing £2 to the fund organised for the relief of the women and children starving in the North of England, Bent a characteristic letter. The following is a translation :-*•'* I send my most pitiful sympathy to the poor women and children who are suffering in consequence of the dispute of the men and the economic misunderstanding of nations. I have Been on the Bpot sufferings such as thase, and I have wept for them. Let peace be made in the name of the little children and their mothers. — Emile Zola." : The -Sunday Times says "sweating is very general in .various trades in Sydney, but that the 'sweated' are too scared to discloae all the horrors of this system of slavery .for fear that they might be deprived of the opportunity of earning even the meagre fare upon which they now subsist." Senator Turple.of Indiana, in hia speech in the Senate on the silver question remarked :—■" What an unconscious but strange biae there ia in law and language towards the side of those who have much. Silver found in a stocking iB called a hoard, and its keeper is a miser. Gold found in the triple steel-lined vault is called a reserve, and the name of its owner is capitalist." Mr George Leslie, as organiser fur the Shearers' and Labourers' Union, started out on his organising tour on Monday last. He was to proceed to Kyeburn and then follow the various sheds, and expects to finish about February, when he will have canvassed the whole of the interior, altogether visiting about 40 Bheds. There are 30,000 barmaids in England, whose hours average fourteen daily, for a wage of 10a per week. .
