Auction.— Messrs Bowman and Son will hold a sale of furniture at their rooms at 2 p.m. to-morrow. San Fbancisco Mail.— The s.s. Alameda, with the San Francisco mail, arrived at Auckland this morning. The southern portion of the mail will arrive at Welling-, tod by train to-morrow night, and will be token to Lyttelton by the Eotorua, which will be delayed till II p.m. Football. — " Quidnunc " brings his review of the season to a close in this week'a Canterbury Times, with a reference to the Junior and Thursday players. The Waimakabibi- Ashley Wateb Supply Case. — This morning His Honor Mr Justice Denniaton gave judgment for the defendants in the case brought by Mr M, Dizon against the WaimakaririAshley Water Supply Board. Arbeqt. — A man who had been before the Court previously for vagrancy was arrested this afternoon by Constable Barrett for stealing two pairs, of blankets belonging to J. Lee Goon, Manchester street. A Small Fibe.— On Oct. 10 the bathing Bhed at Moeraki was discovered to be on fire. After some trouble the fire was extinguished, but damage to the extent of albout J6lO was done. Two sons of the caretaker had been birdnesting, and were trying to smoke out a starling which was in the shed when the weather-boarding caught fire from the straw which they had lighted. Chbistohubch Central Mission.:—A largely attended "social" was held last night in connection with the Cbristchurcb. Central Mission to inaugurate a Boys' Cricket Club. Paator Birch addressed the boys, expressing the hope that they would grow up to be noble, manly and good oitizens. Mr Martin spoke on the importance of children showing reverence to their parents and elders. Becitations were given by Misses Maggie M'Neish, A. Lawrence and F. Thomas ; songs by Mrs Lawrence, Miss F. Lawrence, . Messrs Sorell, Butler and A. Lawrence. Mrs Birch, presided at the organ. Refreshments were handed round during the evening, and at the clcme'of the programme, fijr Bastion, on behalf of the boys, thanked the audience for their liberal support. Votes of thanks were passed to those who had assisted in the "social" and entertainment. It is intended to have a somewhat similar gathering on behalf of the girls. Valedictory. — On Tuesday evening last the teachers and elder scholars of the Sunday school connected with Trinity Congregational Church assembled to take farewell of Miss Harband, 8.A., who is about to leave for India to take up Zenana work in Madras, under the auspices of the London Missionary Society. Miss .Harband has been connected with the school bb scholar and teacher for upwards of twenty years, and has for several years held important appointments under the North Canterbury Board of Education, having just relinquished a good position at the Weßt Christchurch school to take up missionary work. The Rev S. J. Baker oocupied the chair, and in the course of the evening opportunity was taken to present Miss Harband with a dressingcase from the teaohers of the Sunday school, and with a framed photographic group from the members of her class. Mr Greenwood, the superintendent, and several of the teachers expressed regret at the toss of so valuable a teacher, but wished Miss Harband every success and Godspeed in the important and difficult work to which she is giving her life. The public valedictory meeting to Miss Harband will take place in Trinity Church on Thursday next. Pbize Stoby. — The prize story appearing in the current number of the Canterbury Times is entitled " Snakes." Progressive Liberal Association. — A meeting of the lady members of the Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association will be held rathe Oddfellows' Chambers this evening. Voltjntebb Inspection. — "The Com* mandant of the New Zealand Forces, Colonel Fox, will inspect the Christ's College Bines and the Christchurch Rifles this evening at 7.80. Sailing.— The well-known authority on sailing matters, *• Spinnaker-boom," reviews in this week's Canterbury Times the contest between the American and English rivals for the possession of the abovementioned trophy. " Centre-board " has some timely remarks on the Estuary fleet, dealing chiefly with the new crafts. Queen's Cadets.— At the parade of the Queen's Cadet corpß last evening, Captain Jones announced' that an offer had been received from a gentleman to give.the lads an excursion into the country if they would muster one-third of their strength at the parades to be held during the ensuing two months. The Kennel.— The recent alterations in the English Kennel Club rules, which practically govern the ' "canine fancy "all over the world, are given, with comments, in the kennel columns of this week's Canterbury Times. The Hon W. P. Beeves.-- Under the heading Electoral, friends and supporters of the Hon W. P. Beeves (ladies being especially included) are reminded that a meeting will be held at eight o'clock this evening in the Assembly Boom, Hobba' Buildings. The Eai Valley.— -A correspondent contributes to this week's Canterbury Times a very interesting description of the above-mentioned place, and in addition has some remarks upon the timber industry of the district, and its capacity for grazing purposes* Papanui.— Last evening a lecture entertainment was given in the St Paul's schoolroom, Papanui, by the Bey J. O'Bryen Hpare. The firat part was entitled " The Life of Queen Victoria," and the second, " Enoch Arden." To illustrate the subjects two series of photographs were shown by Mr T. Crook, by the aid of the oxy-ether lantern. The audience was large, and its appreciation was manifested by hearty applause at frequent intervals. Sporting.— Prominent in the sporting pages of this week's Canterbury Times is a review of the two-year-olds of the season, with special reference to the Welcome Stakes at the ensuing Canterbury Jockey Club Spring Meeting. The racing news and comments will be found interesting and comprehensive, and due space is given to trotting matters, coursing, angling and other sports. .... Kaiapoi Woollen Manufactubing Company.— At a meeting yesterday the Directors of this Company had the past year's work under review, and on the balance-sheet submitted decided to recommend the payment, of a dividend for the half-year at the rate of 9 per cent per annum, and place .£ISOO to reserve, leaving a substantial sum to be carried forward. "The Finest Gabdenin theWobld." •— Thiß is the title worthily applied to an article descriptive of Kew Gardens, which appears in this week's Canterbury Times, which also contains the usual notes and memoranda which are so useful to all gardeners. Students of Tbuth.— Laßt evening the members of the Students of Truth Dramatic Club gave a performance of Sheridan's comedy The Rivals. There was a good attendance, and the performance was much appreciated by those present. The characters were well sustained by Misses Jones, Shefferd and Pearce, and Messrs W. M'Kenzie, W. E. Barry, J. Morrison, E. F. Owen, E. Fowler and C. E. Thompson. Mr A. J. Burgess acted as stage manager. ' The Cavalry Encampment.— Yesterday the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, now in camp at the Aldington Show Ground, held a dismounted parade and practised vollej firing at 6.30, and at 10 there was a mounted parade. The troop was put through some new drill and skirmishing a1 3, after which it did some out-post and vidette drill between Fendalton and Papanui. Colonel Fox was present in uniform at the morning and afternoon parades To-day, at 9.30, the troop went througl its annual volley and independent firing a1 the Bromley range. Lieutenant Archei was the officer of the day, with Sergeasi Coward as orderly sergeant.
