A general meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held yesterday afternoon, at the Clnb's rooms. There was a fairly large attendance, and the Hon E. W.Parker occupied the chair. NEW MEMBEBS. The following new members were duly elected :— Messrs Henry Cotterill, L. C. Gardiner, Eden Georpe, R. M. Macdonald, G. W. M'Rae, J. H. Parkinson and J. C. Waaon. EACE BALL. The question of holding the uaual race ball was discussed. The Chairman announced, that the Bum of .£53 2s 8d remained over from previous years, and was available for thia year. On the motion of Mr Thomas, seconded by Mr Bullock, it was decided to give a ball during race week. The advisableness of erecting a ballroom was .suggested by Mr Mearea. The Chairman and Messrs Meares, Campbell, Scott and Palmer were appointed a sub-Committee to carry out the details of the ball. A General Committee of Management was aleo appointed, consisting of Messrs Anderson, Bullock, Cowlishaw, Meares, Louisaon, Peacock, Prins, Rhodes, Sfcead and Walker. chairman's eepoet. The Chairman reported on the general affairs of the Club. He said that the Committee had been trying to improve, the property of the Club in various directions. Among other things it had been decided to adopt a new totalisator on the lawn on a new and improved system, which had been tried with much success in Dunedin. The present totalifiator would still be kept on as an outside machine, and could be worked from the lawn by those who so desired. The Course Committee had also decided to make alterations to the Judge's box, and to remove it further up the straight. This would make the straight thirty yards longer, and would prevent what had hitherto been a disadvantage, the box from coming in the line of .vision of the occupants of certain parts of the grand-stand. Everybody in the grand-Btand would now see the finishes. It was proposed to build a cloak-room under the grand-stand for the use of members. He congratulated the Club sincerely upon its success. The entrances for the November meeting were larger than ever, instead of being lower, as those of most Clubs were. The representation of country Clubs had now obtained a definite position, and at the next conference the country Clubs would be well represented on the lines of the rules laid down by the proposal introduced by the Hon J. D. Ormdnd at the last meeting of the conference. The country Clubs were to b^ represented too well if anything at the next conference, and they had been asked to definitely appoint fewer representatives. • ■ > LICENSE FEES AND FINES. A short discussion took place with reference to the license fees charged to jockeys and trainers, and the fines inflicted for disobeying the rules of licensing. The Chairman mentioned that the Committee intended to pass a resolution grantiug the moneys accruing from the fees to tho fund devoted to distressed jockeys. Mr Boyle and otherß spoke of the system of licensing jockeys, which pressed rather heavily upon boys who were employed in stables, and who seldom had the chance of a mount. In reply to a question, the Secretary said that boys leading racehorses were always allowed within the enclosure without the production of a license. After some further discussion on the matter the meeting terminated.
