CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. (Before R. Westenra, Esq., and Captain ..- Deighton.) Drunkenness. — Edward Allison was fined 5s end costs, or in, default twentyfour hours' imprisonment. Alleged Attempt to Commit Suicide. —George E. Bentley was charged with having, on Sept. 26, 1893, at the Christchurch Hospital, unlawfully taken a certain quantity of poison called eye-drops, vith the intent then and thereby to kill himseif. x Accused appeared in Court in a very weak condition, and asked to be allowed to Bit down. Their Worships allowed him to take a seat near the dock. Sergeant-Major Mason said that accused was discharged from the Christchurch Hospital on Thursday and at once taken into custody on the present charge. He was at present in a weak condition and not in a fit state to inswer to the charge. Their Worships remanded him for seven days. Case Dismissed.— Charles Pearce was charged with assaulting James Linney, at Spreydon, on Sept. 26. Mr Burgess appeared for complainant and Mr Creaswell for defendant, who denied the charge. kitet hearing the evidence their Worships lismissed the case, each party having to pay its own coßts. Using Inbulting Language. — Catherine Sweeney was charged with using insulting language towards Louisa Finnerty, at Cumberland street, Richmond, on Sept. 28. There was a crosß-action, in which Catherine Sweeney charged Patrick Finnerty with using insulting language towards her at Cumberland street, Richmond, on Sept. 28. Mr Hoban appeared for the two Finnertys, and Mr Donnelly for Sweeney. The defendants in each case denied the charge. After hearing a large quantity of evidence, which was mostly of a contradictory nature and unfit for publication, thei? Worships dismissed the case against Patrick Finnerty, and fined, Catherine Sweeney 5b and coßts. Alleged Receiving Stolen Property, —Joseph Cawthine was charged with having, on Sept. 2, received from William Warner one lady's cloak, value £4> 10s, the property of Mrs Julia Glover, well knowing the same to have been stolen. Julia Glover deposed that she missed the cloak produced from her boarding-house between August 31 and Sept. 2. There was a handkerchief in the cloak when witnees missed it. Witness' name was on the corner of the handkerchief. Was present in the Police Court when a man named Warner was charged with stealing the cloak. Detective Benjamin said he went to accused's shop on Sept. 4, and asked him if he had bought a cloak two days previously. Accused said he bought the cloak from a man for i 2s. Took witness into a room behind S the shop, and showed him the cloak. Witness found a handkerchief in the cloak and saw the name Glover on it. Accused said he intended giving information to the police in regard to buying the cloak, but had failed to do so. ■ Detective Neill deposed that a man named William j Warner was charged at the Police Court ■ on Sept., 27 with stealing the cloak . prodnced. He pleaded " Guilty," and was j sentenced to six months' imprisonment, j This was the case for the prosecution. For the defence Ella Tiller deposed that ! she was in accused's shop on Sept. 2, when two men came in. One o£ them Had a, oloak, which he offered to sell to accused for 2s. The man said the cloak was his property. Accused bought the cloak, and watched for the police to pass his shop on the following day. Accused elected to give evidence. He admitted buying the cloak from Warner, thinking it was his property. Told Warner that he would get into trouble if the oloak did not belong to him. Believed the cloak belonged to Warner. To the Bench : It was a mistake of his not to telephone for the police after he had bought the cloak; he thought Detective O'Connor would be passing his shop some time during the day. Accused was committed to take his trial at the next session of the Supreme Court. He did not apply for bail. He said he was honest and wonld go to ga01. . .
