New Zealand Volunteers.
It seems not unlikely that should any N,eW Zealand pedagogue of the next few years direct his pupils to write "an account of the Volunteers of New Zealand/ the youngsters may be able to follow the example of the writer of the historical essay on " Snakes in Ireland," and to confine their effusions to the terse sentence. "There are no Volunteers in New Zealand." The manner in which the force has been treated for some years past would have long ago broken up any force com* posed of less obstinate men than Britons. A protracted period of utter neglect was followed by a glimmering of hope, caused by the appearance of a specially imported officer, who was to lead the Voluuteers from disorganisation and inefficiency back to organisation and efficiency. He came, saw and reported. His report has disappeared behind a promise that it shall ba— discussed. It is not surprising that the Volunteers are almost ia the last Btages of that heart-sickness which, arises from hope deferred.
