In Christchurch itself, vety little interest appeared to be taken in Arbor Day, and, owing to many of the suburban schools being closed on account of measles, their was not as much planting done as last year. The Government Offices were closed.
About sixty children from the East Christchurch Bchool, in charge of the headmaster, Mr Scott, proceeded to New Brighton at ten o'clock by a special tram, provided by the Tram Company. On arrival there, under the direction of Mr Murphy, they planted a number of trees 3n some of the streets, and afterwards went to the Selwyn County Council's Eeserve, where about three hundred pines were put in. The New Brighton school children, with the local Committee, planted a number of ornamental trees in the playground. The children attending the Sydenham school proceeded to the Cashmere hills Dornaia and planted a number of trees there.
The members of the Sydenhain Borough Council met at the Council Chamber at 2 p.m., and, with a number of friends, went
. to the Sydenham Recreation Reserve at : Addington, and carried on planting opera- , tlons there. I The children of the Richmond school | assembled and planted trees in the schoolground. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 4. Heavy rain interfered with Arbor Day, and the proceedings were postponed. ■ DUNEDIN, August 4. ! Most of the city schools planted trees on the belt or convenient localities. The Amenities Society planted a reserve near the cemetery, but the holiday is only observed at the public offices and a few mercantile houses. The general opinion is that Friday, or the fourth of the month, ought to ba Avoided in future. TIMARTJ, August 4. The weather was dull thia afternoon. Arbor Day was celebrated by a procession |of nine hundred school children. The ; Mayoress planted the first tree in the park, and was presented with a silver trowel. There is not much planting to be done. The children were regaled with i refreshments.
