MAY DAY IN EUROPE.

A large part of the working population of Marseilles took part in the May-Day celebration. "Towards evening tho crowds became disorderly, Socialists waved red flags, and the police tried in vain to arrest them. There was s tremendous fight, in which the police were worsted. Then the hussars took a hand, and the fight became fiercer. Among others who were trampled under foob was M. Floyal, a Municipal Councillor, who had nearly all his clothing torn off. By the united efforts of the military and the police the mob was split up into groups and driven off the ground. In the evening bands of luffians attacked isolated policemen, wounding them seriously. Some disorders occurred in Paris, in the Place de la Republique. At Lyons the working men stopped the tram-cara. Turbulent times were had in Berlin, but the police were equal to the occasion. In Amsterdam Socialists paraded the streets and came into conflict with the police, who soon mastered them. Fifty-six meetings were held by working men in Vienna during the day, but the police kept out of sight, and no efforts were made to disturb the meetings.
