[Per Press Associati6n."l ■' "'-■ DEATH FROM GRIEF. AUCKLAND, April 11. Mrs Lane, wife of Captain Lane, master of the miasing schooner Maile, died to-day at her home in Ponsonby. She worried a great deal over the supposed drowning of - her husband, whose boat is now fifty-two days out from Launceston, Tasmania. Mm Lane leaves a family of several voting children. SILYEE MINING. The Crown Landa Board, at a meeting to-day, approved of: a number of leases for silver mining at Great Barrier Island. PAYMENT OF SCHOOL TEACHERS, The Board of Education has reaolved to send to the Minister for Education a resolution adopted by the Auckland City Schools Committee, asking the Government to return to the system of paying on the working average instead.of the etrict average attendance. MEMORIAL TABLETS. Nine tablet tables in honour of the Revs Walter Lawry; John Hobba, Thomas Buddie, James Buller, John Warren, Q. Buttle, Joseph H. Fletcher, Alexander Reid. and C. H. Shnackenb'erff, have been placed in the Pitt street Wesleyan ; Church, and were unveiled last night. • MOTHERS'. UNION 1 . - At a largely-attended public meeting tonight a branch of the Mothers' Union, established by the Countess of Glasgow, wa3 formed. TheCounteßs of Glasgow delivered an address on behalf of the Society. A LARGE FUNERAL. The funeral of the late Mr M'Nicol today was attended by five thousand people, and was the largest ever known in the Waikato. JOURNALISTS' INSTITUTE. WELLINGTON, ipau, 11. The annual meeting of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists was held this afternoon. The balance-sheet showed that the branch was in a very satisfactory condition financially. Mr E. T. Gillon (Chairman), Mr C. Earl© (Secretary), and Mr W. H. Atack (Treasurer) were re-elected. The following were elected as country members of the Committee: — Messrs W. F. Rdydhouse (Wairarapa), W. H. J. Seffern (Taranaki) and E. Price (Napier). FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY. The Free Public Library will be opened on Thursday by Mr Justice Richmond. THE STELLA. The Government steamer Stolla was put up to auction this afternoon, and was withdrawn at .£1250. • • THE JEWELLERY ROBBERY. The police received information from Sydney, to-night that the jewellery which the young man Milla disposed of here was stolen from the Exhibition Hotel, Castlereagh street, Sydney, in September last. It was the property of D. A. Matheson.and was valued at J8275. Several silver watches bought from the accused by pe6ple in Wellington have T>een recovered by the detective. ' * <.;-'• EDUCATIONAL. HOKITIKA, April 11. At the Education Board to-night Mi Gammell, the Inspector and Secretary, reBigned the position, and it was resolved to invite applications for the appointment; POLITICAL LEAGUE. * DUNEDIN, April 11. . A meeting of the Porb Chalmers Political League was held to-night, the object being to secure unanimity of action at the coming general election, as it is understood that there are no less than eeven candidates prepared to come forward in the Government interest. Addresses were delivered by Sir R. Stout, the Hon TV*. Bolt, Messrs Pinkerton, Earnshaw and others, who all urged the sinking of petty interests. EXCURSION TRAINS. At a meeting of the Shop Assistants 9 Union it was decided to suggest to the Railway Commissioners that excursion trains from the country to Dunedin should be run on some other day than Saturday.
