A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Belief Fund was held this morning j the Mayor of Christchurch presided, and ■ there' was^a large attendance. The Mayor stated that he had tele-' graphed to' the : Bail way -Commissioners, asking' them to grant a half-holiday oh Thursday, March 9, to the men in the Addington workshops and the good* shed. He had not yet received a reply. Mr fiarley stated that there was no probability of the Banks closing on Thurs- - day. He thought that the 'merchants* offices would not generally oloße. : The Mayor of Sydenhaor remarked that the movement to have a holiday in Sy denham was not initiated from any feeling of antagonism to thatin town, bat because it was felt that on Thursday it would not be possible to get a large attendance of members of the Friendly'' Societies/ as the men who had already contributed could not! afford to forego half-a-day's pay. Therefore, it was proposed to hold' a church parade of the Societies on Sunday. Mr C. Foster, ■' representing the Oddfel lons, said the members of that Society, many of, whom bad already given half a day's pay, could not afford to lose another half day. Mr Harley pointed out that Bhop asßistaritß and others could get 'away on Thurs-. day. He thought* therefore, that it: would be liest to go on with the Thursday demonstration. % ...V, : .~'v^';J; : -:::: " > ; Ifr was pointed out. tbafc thel'inoßt ' attractive feature of the demonstration on Thursday would be the Friendly Societies' procession, and that if the twpdeaionß.tratiorie Wjßrei held oner. wpmd prbbftbly^'spoil the other. ■">/■ •' tl: -;' 1 ;;•'• ." i jjTbe Mayor of St 'Aißan^^icggesteji having, a .torchlight; 1 . procession and display of fireworks on Thursday evening.
