Meeting of Creditors.

The firßt meeting of the creditors in the estate of John Thompson, of Chris tchnrcb, painter, was held yesterday afternoon. Mr Deacon appeared for the bankrupt, and there were seven creditors present. The bankrupt's statement showed debts to unsecured creditors— Mason, Struthers and Co., ironmongers, £386 9a 4d; E. Assets beyond the securities held by oreditors consisted of stock-in-trade, cost £1000, estimated to produce £400 ; book debts, £200, estimated to produce £150 ; furniture, £70 ; . five ehares in D.1.C., £5 ; surplus from securities in hands of aecnred creditors, £148 17a 23; total, £773 17a 2d. Deficiency, £781 16s 3d.

The debtor, in his sworn statement to the Offioial Assignee, stated that he had carried on business as a painter in Christchurch for about twenty years. His unsecured debts at the present time were about JJI6OO, and secured debts about £2600. He had not beard from his English creditors lately.. Was sued by Messrs Mason, Strutherß and Cu. for £50 recently. Judgment was given against him, and Messrs Mason, Strnthers and Co. had. taken out a distress warrant. This compelled him to file. He attributed his bankruptcy to speculating in property and keeping too muoh stock, for which he had given bills which he could not meet at maturity. He was a married man with six children, and had an invalid mother and sister to support.

In answers to Mr Struthers, the debtor stated that be first considered himself in debt about Oct. 16 last, when be could not meet a bill of £62. Saw his solicitor about hia financial position a few days before he received the bill. His solicitor advised him to call his creditors togetoer. Before the meeting of creditors he bought a piano for £57, which he sold for ,£6l. Did. not keep any books, as be did not know anything about bookkeeping. On the motion of Mr Struthera, seconded by Mr F. Cross, it was resolved that Mr W. Eeece should be appointed supervisorof the estate, to act with the Official Assignee. The meeting then closed.
