Caledonian Society.
ANNUAL 'MEETING. The eleventh annual meeting of the Canterbury Caledonian Society was held j in the rooms, Hereford street, last night. There was a good attendance, the chair being occupied by Mr W. Boag, President. Apologies were received for the absence' of Messrs P. Cunningham* J. Anderson; jun., and P. Campbell. The annual report dealt generally with the work of the year, and referred to the success of the social entertainments given by lady and gentleman friends, to whom the Directors tendered their thanks. For the Caledonian scholarships offered by the Society, eight candidates presented themselves for examination, and John Poßter, a pupil of the. Normal School, obtained 50 per cent of marks in the' special subjeots, viz., Scottish history and Scottish literature ; and the Directors had awarded him a scholarship of the . annual, value of £15, which was' tenable for two i years, and at the end bf that time he would be entitled to an additional year's free education at the Boys' High School, kindly granted by the Governors of j Canterbury College. : The balance-sheet showed receipts from all sources to be £160 6s 9d. The pay- j ments had been on account of " socials. " | ,£33 4s 4d, St Andrew's supper £16 19s Bd, j scholarship £12 7s Bd, liabilities 18911 £17 15a 6d, general £57 17s 3d, leaving a balance of £22 2a 4d. The statement showed an amount of £150 16s 3d assets over liabilities. ' : The President, in moving' the adoption of the Directors' report, regretted his unavoidable absence from the annual supper, and referred to the handsome present made by Mr P. Campbell on hia return from the Old Country. He also referred in feeling terms to the loss the Society had sustained by the death of Mr E. B. Anderson. Mr J. Connal seconded the motion, and, referring to the lapse of the former Bporta gatherings, remarked that if those who were anxious to have sports were to guarantee to make good any loss the Society would be glad to carry them out. The, report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. On the motion of Mr A. Maloolm, seconded by Dr Thomas, it was resolved that a suitable inscription should, be made on the ram's head given by Mr P. Camp* bell. It was resolved that a Benevolent Fund should be inaugurated by a levj of half a crown being made on each member .during the first year. , Dr Thomas moved, Mr Marshall seconded and it was agreed — " That the principle of having a dancing and singing class in connection with the Society be affirmed." The matter was left to the Board of Directors to carry out. . I . The election of officers for the year'resulted as follows:— President, Mr Patrick Campbell ; Vice-Pieaidents, Messrs W. Boag, J. Connal, B. Struthers and Dr Thomas; Directors, Messrs J. Faith, P. Martiu, C. J. Marshall, J. Anderson, Jan., W. Sey and J. Moir ; Auditors, Messrs T. B. Craig and W.E. Ramsay.' Rule 4 was altered to provide that the Directors should in future elect members, instead of it being left to the general, mefttinga of the Society to do so. ' '. ; Yoteß of thanks to the retiring President and Directors closed the meeting.
