The Cheviot Estate.— Mr J. S. Caver-. hill was the first occupier of the now famous Cheviot Estate. He took it up in the year 1848, and, under the conditions cf his lease, stocked it and erected certain improvements, including a house, woolshed, &c„ early in 1849. In a private ■ -ommunication received yesterday from Te Aroha, . where Mr Caverhill is no at residing for the benefit of his health, he aays that he considers Cheviot undoubtedly the best grazing land in the Colony, capable of carrying 100,000 sheep well all the year round. He adds that in bis opinion the estate is admirably suited for agriculture and small farms. Mobbis-tube Shooting.— On Friday the Christchurch Working Men's Club rifle class fired off the second stage of No. 4 competition for prizes presented by Messrs .J. Gould and C. Louisson, with the following leading results :— W. Garrard (sor) 35, W. A. Caldwell (2) 35, W. G. Munford (3) 84, M. Robertson (sor) 33, J. Hastie (scr) 33, W. Taylor (2) 33, H. Spicer (1) 32, H..Maoarthy (3) 32, R. C. Wells (Bcr) 31, H, Thomas (2) 31. O. W. Turpin (scr) 30, O. Cookson (1) 30. On Saturday the members competed for a class prize, the highest scorers being— J. Lawrence (1) 34, R. C. Wells (sor) 33, W. G. Munford (3) 83, C, Morris (3) 32, H. Reynolds (scr) 32, C.Sherwood (scr) 32, O. W. Turpin (scr) 32, £. Cowan (Bcr) 31, M. Robertson (scr) 31, J. Hastie (scr) 31, aud C. Marsh (4) 30. Next Friday tbe ninth. stage of ;No. 1 .competition will be fired off.
