CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Board was held this morning; present — MrR. Westenra (Chairman), and Messrs J. T. Smith, H. W. Peryman, W. H. Cooper, T. York, W. Acton Adams/ J. Hamilton, A. Chalmers, J. Forrester, the Mayor of Ashburton and the Hon W. C. Walker. j An apology ires received from Mr B. H. Parish. - • chairman's statement. The Chairman made the following statement :— I have received a letter from Mr Parish apologising for his absence from this meeting. The bneiness to be brought before the Board to-day is only of a formal nature, but I may say that the next meeting -will be an important one as the annual estimates will'be sabmitted and tendersfor supplies, &c., will have to be considered. Members will have received a copy of the lißt of names of recipients on the Ist inst. Copies have: also been supplied to the local authorities in the several contributing districts. As Mr Cooper's motion pursuant to notice is for information relating to officers' salaries, I have anticipated the Board's compliance with the mover's wish, by preparing a lut which will be found on the table. As to the duties of the several officers, the nature of the office held by each will sufficiently indicate -what they are required to do. ' ■ On the motion of Mr Cooper, seconded by the Hon W. C. Walker, acopy of the list of officers, with their salaries and duties, was ordered to be sent to each member of the Board. \ OUTDOOR RELIEF, JANUARY, 1893. The following were read : — The average number of caseß relieved for the p»st six years has been almost exactly maintained during the past month, the total for January being 399, and comprising 1357 persons. This compares favourably with the corresponding month last year, when the numbers were 415 and 1502 respectively. The report was approved. INDOOR RELIEF, JANUARY, 1893. There were 10 children resident at the Lyttelton Orphanage and 31 boarded out from that institution on Jan. 31. Three deaths occurred at the Old Men's Home, Ashburton in the course of the month, the vacancies so caused being soon filled. The number of inmates of the Memorial Home, Woolston, is steadily increasing, there being now ten men and twenty-seven women in the institution. The thanks of the Board are due to Messrs A. J. White, F. Delamain and Co., and others who supplied the means of enabling the inmateß to enjoy a holiday at Sumner; also to the Harbour Board for •■ the use of the tug Lyttelton on the occasion of the children's annual picnic. The reports of the lady visitors on the Orphanage and other children boarded out are satisfactory. This also was approved. FINANCIAL. . The Treasurer reported the receipt of the following contributions since the last meeting of the Board: — Waipara Road Board (on account), .£100 ; Eyre ton Eoad Board (in full), £95 5b lOd; MandevilleRanßiora Road Board (on account), £65 7s 6d ; Sumner Borough Council (in full), £24 143 6d; donation from the Assembly Balls Committee to the funds of the Queen's Jubilee Memorial Home, £10 10s ; sundry refunds and recoveries, £44 16*. 1 The overdraft at the Colonial Bank is £1594 178 lid.
