DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING.

[JTBOM OUR OWN COBBKBPONDBNT.J I Thibd Dat. ! Handicapper— Mr G. Dowse. Starter — Mr S.Powell. The weather waa juat as beantifnl for the third day's racing of the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting as it was on Thursday. The attendance was, perhaps, a little larger, the racing was quite aa interesting, and speculation was brisk. With reference to the last-mentioned item, Messrs Maaon and Boberts succeeded in Sassing .68395 through the machines tiring the afternoon. This, added to the amounts handled on the first and second days, brings the total sum dealt with at the meeting to \_824,690, or J83832 less than the amount which passed through the totalisator at the corresponding meeting last year. As already stated, : the racing was most interesting, a fact which shows that Mr Dowses handicaps were carefnlly compiled. Mr Powell's starting was not quite as uniformly good as on the preceding days of the meeting, but that gentleman was in no way to blame for the accident which ; caused several horses to be left at the post |in the Hopeful Stakes. Despite the heavy ! weight which Magpie was asked to carry in the Handicap Hurdle Bace, with which proceedings were commenced, the son of Betrayer was most in demand for that event. He was not, however, quite equal i to the task of defeating Bebel, who won I with perhaps a trifle to spare, while Moon- ! light finished a neck away, third. Immediately Mr Powell dropped hio flag in the Hopeful Stakes, Saracen, who was on the extreme outside, swerved across Vogengang, and then in turn cannoned into Response and Beadonwell, with the _ result that the three were left at ' the post, and Bosehill and Au Bevoir jumped away with a five lengths advantage of Persuasion. The last-named made up her gronnd very fast, but although she caught Bosehill, she could not reach Au Bevoir, j who won rather easily by a couple of ! lengths. Prime Warden was made a ; slightly hetter favourite than Heather . Bell for the Forbury Handioap, and the • pair finished tfirst and second; Prime | Warden, who appeared all the hetter for 1 his day's rest, and who commenced much : quicker than ÜBual, -winning with a little to , spare from Mr Hungerford's mare, while : Kulnine was close up, third. Strowan was ! cent to the post an odds-on favourite for ' the Marshall Memorial Stakes. Mr Stead's colt won, bnt it was only by a nose, from Outpost, who, like the winner, is not at his beßt gust now. The start for the Flying Handicap Baw Huguenot and Frivolity left at the post, and Saracen, jumping away in front, remained in command until the distance post was reached. Here, however, the much-improved Au 'Bevoir made his effort, and quickly settling the pretensions of the leader, won comfortably by a length. Des- ! pite his former failures, LakeshellwassupI ported with such spirit for the Maiden -to. o- : year-old Handicap thathe Btarted favourite at even money. However, the half-brother to Pygmalion once again filled the unenvi- ; able position of seoond, as Qitano beat him rather comfortably at the finish by a length, and Taranna, who appears to be improving, finished third. Bondinella, after making all the running in the Disposal Stakes, and winning very eaßily from Bothamsted, returned to her owner at JB3O, while Lady Mab, who was unplaced, was claimed by Mr J. Allan,, and waß bought in at £50. Yogengang received more support than Awarua Bose for the Consolation Handicap, bnt they were both defeated by Wyvern, who struggled on most gamely, after appearing to be beaten at the top of the straight. ' !■

Mr D. O'Brien's Freedom was landed at Lyttelton this morning, from the steamer Wakatipu, from Sydney, while the same owner's horses Viscount, Besponse and Taranna, and Mr Hungerford's Heather Bell and Wyvern were landed from the Wairarapa, from Dunedin.
