M'lntyre, Chairman of Directors \ of the New Brighton Tramway Company, \ wrote, Btating that the Company wonld ' willingly allow its share of the receipts in connection with the benefit f.te at Tahuna Park to be applied to the relief fund. The offer was received with thanks. Mr Mitchell reported that the Canvassing Committee had met at Mr Meares' offlce that morning and had. started on their mission at once. This waa all the business.
A proposal was brought up at the Christchnroh Begatta Committee meeting, last night, for a benefit regatta to be held at Rhodes'' Bay within a fortnight. The meeting considered the matter favourably, and the members of the Committee decided to reply to the promoters to the effect that the members wonld urge their respective Clubs to give their support to the proposal, it being understood that the members of the Committee themselves would fall in heartily with it. It was suggested that the races should be confined to Btump outriggers, and that the gathering should take plaoe on a Thursday afternoon. ; Mr E. Idle, of the Jollies Pass hotel, has opened a list for subscriptions to the fund for the relief of the sufferers by the j floods in Queensland. j At the Theatre Eoyal last night, an ! entertainment was given in aid of the Queensland sufferers. Considering the objeot and the admirable programme, the * attendance was not by any means as large as might be expected, though many took tickets probably "who did not attend, thereby missing a treat. The first part of ' the programme consisted of songs and instrumental pieceß. Messrs Day, Appleby, Edgar, Weir and Misses Bell and Watson (who took the plaoe of Mrs Edgar, who was unavoidably absent through indisposition) were deservedly encored, as waa a piano duet by Miss Yartha and Mr Watkins. At ; the conclusion of the first part the Mayor i stepped on to the stage, and on behalf of the t Executive Committee' thanked the various j performers, and Mr Crook, by whom the j entertainment had been arranged. Various . entertainments were being arranged, and ] he hoped all wonld be successful, and that ttiey would all assist in making the j fund a credit to Canterbury and New Zealand. The second part consisted of a Bplendid set of dissolving views shown by Mr Crook, and interspersed with descriptive songs by Mr H. Weir and Miss Bell, and a recitation, illustrated by views by Mr Crook, " Jane Conquest."- A splendid Bechstein grand piano was lent for the occasion by Messrs Milner and Thompson, and Mr Fuhrmann supplied the furniture free of charge, while the trustee ofthe theatre met the promoters of the entertainment very liberally. At -\a meeting of the sub-Committee appointed to arrange for the demonstration at Lancaster Park on Thursday, March 9, Mr J. M. Douglass was entrusted witb the duty of organising, the procession of the Friendly. Societies, to start from Latimer Square at 1.30 p.m. Mr H. O. D. Meares undertook to see the Park . authorities i relative to the use of the park, and Mr G. R. Hart agreed to seoure the interest of the bicycle clubs in the gathering. It was thought advisable to invite the schoolchildren to a second display of the views of "Old Canterbury Illustrated " in preference to asking them to take part in the procession on March 9; a nominal charge to be made for the benefit of the 'Belief Fund. It waa left with the Committee to make- arrangements for the use of the Tuam street hall for this purpose on a subsequent afternoon.
