Butchers' Picnic.

Early this 'morning there was some : at>xi6ty as to how the weather would be ■for the annual butchers' picnic, but by ten o'clock, although the sky waa overcast,,, there waa every probability of a fine day.. The place of assembly was Cathedral square, and shortly after the time appointed the square presented a very gay appearance. Meßßrs Pyne, Thompson, and Row, before the start, awarded prizes aB. follows : — Best two-wheeled turn-out : (hired)— H. Jenner 1, G. Smith 2. Beßt iotiti, fiSe^ butchera' turn-out (undecorated) — fl. S. Harris 1, R Bryenton 2; | (decorated)-— H. S. Harris I, A. Recce 2. Best-dressed butcher's boy on butcher's, horse— Lovick 1, Victor 2. Beßt-dressed butcher on butcher's horse— J. Smith 1, G. Robertson 2. Best-dresßed butcher on hired horse— W. Brown 1, H. King 2. Mr J. Hicks acted as marshal, and at 10.25 started the procession in the following' order :— The butchers' banner, with the, motto "The Boast Beef of Old England," carried by Messrs Horwell and Cresawell on horseback. About fifty horsemen came next, and then a drag with the Engineers' band, followed by other dragß containing: the master butchers and friends; some forty trapß making up an imposing spectacle. The procession went north as far as Saliebury street, and returned through the principal streets. The holi-day-makers then went, by way of Riccarton, to the racecourse, where numerous sports were held. A ball will be held this evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, Licbfield street. Mr C. Fox's quadrille band will be in attendance. !
