■ .- ♦ ■ ■ ' CHRISTCHUBOH BIJFLEB. A very enjoyable Bmoke concert waß held last night in the orderly-room, by the members of the Christchurch Rifles, to celebrate their success in winning the old First Canterbury Battalion' Shield. There was a fall attendance of the members of the corps, and a number of visiting officers.. Apologies for ■'absence were received from Lieu:-lenant-ColonelvOJordon, Majors Richards and Slater. Captains Bristow, Wilson (Kaiapoi) and Massey, Lieutenant Day, Sergeant Papprill and other members of the varions corps. Captain Andrews presided, and expressed his regret that the notice of the concert had been so short. He was supported by his Worship the Mayor, Captains Boss and Jackson, and many others. The loyal and patriotic ■ toasts having been honoured, the toast of " Our Guests " wad responded to by the Mayor, Mr J. C. Martin, Captain Bobs and several of the officers of other corps present. Lieutenant Sandford proposed "The Donors of Frizes for the Volley-firing." The prizes were then distributed by the Captain. Private P. S. Bobinson was the winner of the champion challenge belt, Captain Andrews being second. Captain Andrews was first in the Boxing Day competition, with ColonrSergeat Bishop second. There were thirty-two other prizes awarded, which were all distributed amid great en/ thnßiasm. The toasts of " The Successful and Unsuccessful Competitors," "The Captain," "The Non-commißßioned Officers," "The Ladies" and "The Press" were honoured, and the evening was passed in a very pleasant way, a number of eongs being contributed by members of the corps and visitors. MOUNTED BIPLBS. A general meeting of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, convened for last night, was not held, as the attendance was not sufficient to warrant the meeting in proceeding with the business. It was therefore decided to defer the meeting till after harvest operations were finished.
