♦■ San Fbancisco Mail.— An early edition of the Canterbury Times was published this morning for transmission by the San Francisco mail. The paper contains a large amount of matter of special interest to Home readers, and a comprehensive budget of Colonial and general news. It may be obtained from the bookstalls or at the office of this journal. The mail will close for newspapers at 7.30 p.m., and should reach London on March 29. Chess.— Mr Siedeberg, the chess champion, was in Christchurch to-day. He is a passenger by the Manapouri for Wellington, en route for Europe. Assigned Stock. — Messrs Shaw, Bobin- i son and Co., of The Hall, High street, are the successful tenderers for the drapary and clothing stock in the assigned estate of C. T. Burgess, of Leeston and Southbridge. Full particulars of the sale, which commences on Friday, will be given in a circular to be issued at the end of the week. Co-opebative Insubancb. — -The second annual meeting of the New Zealand Farmers' Fire and Marine Insurance Association was held this afternoon, when a report and a balance-sheet, both highly satisfactory, were adopted, and a dividend of 7 per cent and a bonus of 3 per cent were declared. The proceedings are reported elsewhere. Canterbury Caledonian Society's Scholabships. — The Directors of the Canterbury Caledonian Society have awarded one of their scholar ships to Master John Foster, a pupil attending the Normal sciiool. As the other candidates did not obtain the minimum number of pass marks in special subjects, the remaining scholarship was not; awarded. j SoYBEarB Com&T.— His Hoaor Mr Justice ' Denniston Bat in Banco this morning, and granted Mr Stringer's application, made on behalf of A. j. Lawrence, to quash the resolution of the Sydenham Licensing Committee and to remove the proceedings j to the Supreme Court. Another Banco sitting will be held to-morrow at eleven, when the case of Gormley (appellant) v. M'lntyre (respondent), a case on appeal from the E.M. Court, Fairlie (Mr Baymond), will be heard. Special Settlement. — The second meeting of the Springfield Special Settlement Association was held in Mr Bull's workshop, St Albans, on Tuesday evening. Mr B. S. Bull waß elected Chairman, Mr Allaway Secretary, and Mr Brewer Treasurer. A number of new members were elected, making a total of sixteen. There are still vacancies for four members. The Secretary was requested to write to Mr Tanner, M.H.E., asking him to be present at the next meeting, to be held oa Friday nest. The meeting then adjourned. Ancient Obdeb of Fobestebs.— The fortnightly meeting of Court Star of Canterbury was held on Monday evening last, when C.B. Bro J. C. Constable was in the chair. The Woodwards reported fifteen sick members at present on the funds.. Sick pay, amounting to £21, was passed for payment. It was decided that the Court should be represented at the Conference of Friendly Societies to consider the Queensland floods.,, Two new members were initiated. P.C.E. Bro T. Gapes, in a very flattering speech, presented P.C.E. Bro F. T. Eldridge with a handsome silver medal, suitably engraved, for his second term of office. Bro Eldridge thanked the Court for their valuable present, and assured them that in the future, as in the past, nothing should be wanting on his part to forward the interests of the Court. A large amount of unimportant correspondence having been dealt with, the C.E. closed the Court in the usual manner. The receipts of the evening amounted to £23 17s. Honobabt Eesebve Cobps.— At a meeting of the Firing Committee at the Orderly Boom, Captain Harm an in the chair, it was decided to invite the Christchuroh Eifles Martini Class to a friendly match, and to arrange return matcties with the Christchurch Martini Club, also the Lincoln and Woodend Eifle Clubs, as soon as possible. Great difficulty has been experienced this season in the arrangements for matches from the scarcity of rifles and ammunition. The question of a suitable time for the annual prize firing of the corps was discussed, and it was resolved that the meeting should take place at the corps' range, Caßhmere, where three Beta of targets will be provided on Eaßter Monday and Tuesday, if necessary, members to be notified by circulars, with fall particulars of matches. It was thought desirable to throw open some of the matches to all Martini-Henry riflemen, whether members of corps or Clubs ; and, as liberal prize lists are anticipated, riflemen may look forward to a most enjoyable day's outing. Full particulars of the meeting will be published. - Kaiapoi Eegatta Committee.— A meeting of this Committee was called on Wednesday evening by advertisement at the Fire Brigade station, where there was an attendance of- twenty-one members. Several apologies for non-attendance were received. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Moore, M.H.E., Mr Hume was voted to the chair, and made some remarks with reference to the holding of the next regatta. Mr F. Parnham moved, and Mr W. Wilßon seconded the following motion : — "lt having been currently reported that the Christchurch Committee would hold their next meeting on the Waimakariri, it is suggested by this Committee that the two should amalgamate and hold a combined regatta on the Waimakariri, or if the Chrißtchuroh Committee wish to hold theirs on the Waimakariri, the Kaiapoi Committee will give them every assistance and facilities for bo doing." This was carried unanimously. It was decided to forward the foregoing resolution to the Christchurch Committee in time for their meeting on Thursday. The Committee then adjourned until an answer should be received.
