» ■ ■, ■ , His Excellency the Earl of Hopetoun paid a visit to Lyttelton yesterday lor the purpose of inspecting the various points of interest around the harbour. He was attended by Lord Northesk (A.D.C.) and Mr Balaton (Private Secretary), and was accompanied by the Hon J. T. Peacock, Captain M'Clatchie and Mr P. Cunningham, members of the Lyttelton Harbour 'Board; , The party was met at Lyttelton by his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. T, Brice), who formally welcomed his Excellency to Lyttelton. The tug Lyttelton was waiting at the steamers' wharf for the visitors, and the whole party proceeded on board, accompanied by Captain Clark (harbourmaster) and Captain Galbraith (pilot). The dock was first inspected and then the tug steamed outside the moles to allow of a good view of the harbour and town being obtained. Returning to the wharf ] his Excellency was given an opportunity of inspecting the manner of stowing in the steamers the carcases of mutton, the freezing of which he had witnessed at the ; Belfast Freezing Works. A visit was paid to the freezing-room of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's cargo steamer Matatua. The party from Christchurch returned to town by the 12.40 train from Lyttelton. > In the afternoon the vice-regal party drove to the Lincoln Agricultural College, and inspected, the buildings and farm premises, in which they all took great interest. j This morning his Excellency and party left for Horeley Down station by the 7.25 train. They will remain the j gueßta of Mr and Mrs J. D. Lance till j Monday, when they will ride to Highfield station, near Waiau, horses having been provided for the whole party, including the Countess of Hopetoun. They will make Kaifcoura on Tuesday, Kekerangu on Wednesday and Starboro on Thursday, reaching Blenheim on Saturday., from where they embark for Wellington. During a few, days' sojourn in Wellington the party will be the guests of the Earl and Countess of Glasgow.
