The Queensland Disaster.
I , TO THE EDITOR. : Sir,— The Mayor of Christchnrch is delaying to call a public meeting to consider, ways and means to relieve the sufferers by the Queensland disaster simply because he requires further particulars. If the Mayor of Brisbane has to answer all such queries by cable the relief fund will suffer considerably. But some individuals seek notoriety in strange ways, as this morning's papers tell us. When the Presß in all parts of the Colony are making an earnest appeal to the public for assistance, it is not for suoh as the Mayor to doubt that help ia urgently needed. As a humble individual! would suggest that all large and small establishments take up subscriptions in money or produce at once, and that Borne of our benevolent friends arrange for a meeting, seeing that the Government and Union Steamship Company haveofferedassistance. Seneca says .•*-" We should give relief as we would receive— cheerfully; quickly and without. hesitation; for there; is no grace in a benefit that: Bticks to the fingers/—l 'a'hV&c-i -• ; ••■ ■> .•:.-■ WQEKING MAN;
