EDUCATION BOARD.
North Canterbury, The Education Board for North Canterbury met at 2 p.m. to-day; presenter T. H. Anson (Chairman), and Messrs T. W. Adams, A. Saunders, H. W. Peryman and E. Westenra. An apology was received for the absence of Mr E.G. Wright. In answer to Mr Saunders, the Chairman said that, at the request of the Hon W. Montgomery, Messrs J. Joyce and E. G. Wright, the day for meeting had been changed. Mr Saundero thought such an alteration waa objectionable, as members made arrangements for certain days, and it made it very inconvenient to them if the day was changed. At a meetingheld in Christchurch recently, which he had attended, he had been asked when the Board would meet, and he had informed them that the Board would meet on the following day. They were going to present a petition, and might not have noticed the alteration of the date of meeting. 1 Mr Adams thought any alteration should' be in the direction of post-dating in preference to ante-dating. ; Mr Peryman explained that he had agreed to the alteration providing the Chairman was consulted, and he thought Wednesday a favourable day because the Appointments Committee met on that day. The discussion then dropped. On the minutes being read, Mr Westenra submitted that the meeting was informal on the ground that the Standing Orders provided that seven days* notice must be given of any meeting. The Chairman said he must admit that the meeting was an illegal one, owing to the notices having been issued for a meeting to be held on Thursday. If Dressed for his ruling, he must say that the present meeting was not properly convened, and must lapse. Mr Westenra regretted that he had brought up the objection, but he felt that if they did not adhere to the Standing Orders the Board would ' soon drift into irregular habits. Mr Saunders said it was highly inconvenient to be brought to town to attend a meeting, and then the meeting not be held. He contended that the ordinary meeting must go on on Thursday, according to the notices sent out. Mr Adams said he should be stopping in town, and should be preßent at the usual time on Thursday. . Mr Peryman ridiculed the idea of going on with the meeting, urging that, as the present meeting must lapse, the Secretary could attend on Thursday morning and formally adjourn the meeting for a week. The Chairman pointed out that if Thursday's meeting were not held it must, under the resolution of the Board, lapse till the Thursday three weeks. It was ultimately decided that the ordinary meeting should go on as usual at 11 a.m.- to-morrow. . V. ■ . ; ; .
