Tbuthful James.-— "A Stranger in a Very Strange Land," writing to the Melj bourne Age from Irivercargill under date •Dec.. 13, says :—" Will you ; allow-, me : through your columns to address a few i cautious remarks to those who : are intendj ing to break .up their homes in Victoria; i ana other 'colonies to take up their resideßce in New Zealand. - From the reports I circulated, New Zealand is looked upon by many as a haven of reßt, where there is any amount of work, and in short a land of full rand plenty. Allow me to inform you that it is nothing of the kind. My experience is as follows: — I have been now two months landed in Dunedin, with a few pounds and ten years' testimonials as salesman, traveller, &c., from several Wellknown leading Melbourne firms, which would carry a man anywhere. Here they are not recognised at all (except as so much waste paper), and anyone shows ! sense by keeping such things ,dark, for the hatred the Ne w Zealander has for anytning Australian is totally beyond description. Although willing to take anything in the shape of honest work 1 ha cc been unable to obtain anything in the shape of employment! at all, and there are plenty besides myself in the same fix. The parks and gardens are full every night of persons quite destitute. My advice, to Victorians is ' Stop where you are."' Women's Institute. — A meeting in connection with the photographic section of the Canterbury Women's Institute was' held in the hall of the Young Men's Christian Association yesterday evening. Mrs May, President of the Health Department of 'the Institute, was in the chair, and Btated that a clats for the practice of photography had been formed under the instruction of Mr Page, of Canterbury Cdllege. .Several intending membera had given in their names, and she would be glad if all who wished to join would do bo as soon as possible. The class is intended to provide members with means of enjoyment during the country walks which are to be taken under the auspices of the Health Department; of decorating, by means of photography, such objects as will admit of it ; and of affording a pleasant and useful occupation. Mr Page read a paper, in which he spoke of the advantages and scope of photography, and the various ÜBes to which it might be put by amateurs. A number of specimens of photographic work of various kinds were, handed round for inspection. A series of photographic Blides, taken from engravings of Boyal Academy pictures in the Art Journal, was shown by Mr Noble with his lantern. The slides were very good ones, and were the work of Mr H. E. May, who, it may be noted, took np the work of produoing lantern alideß only three weeks ago. They were, therefore, genuine Bpecimena. of amateur work. . . ; . ' V '; \ \ ..■ '-.
