THEATRE ROYAL.
■» THE OLD GUARD. On Saturday night Mr J. C. Williamson's Comic Opera Company produced for the first time in Christchurch Farnia and Planquette'a The Old Guard. The success which this opera is known to have achieved in the chief cities of Australia had no doubt induced a very large number to gather at the Theatre Eoyal, which was crowded with a most appreciative, and consequently enthusiastic; audience. The scenery consists of three charming " sets/ the first representing the village of Vaudrez lea Vignes; the second an interior of the old Castle of D'Artemare, and the third the park belonging to the castle. The first and second are the work of Mr Goatcher and the third is that of Mr Brunton. The dresses are as fresh and picturesque as any in which the company has hitherto appeared, and add greatly to the general effect. The special feature of the performance as a spectacle was undoubtedly the sensational " Fin de sieele" ballet. In this the costumes were exquisitely harmonious in colour, the movements of the " ballerinas" were exceedingly graceful, and the numerous and intricate figures were most skilfully executed. The enthusiasm arouaed by the ballet waa an unmistakeable tribute not only to the executants but also to Miss Marie Reddall and M. Leon Caron, who respectively arranged the figures and the music. M. Flanquette has composed for this opera music which is ligjht, sparkling, tuneful and original. The choruses are very full and harmonious, and were admirably suug. The absence of Mr Charles Ryley was felt in the solo singing ; but the bolos were, nevertheless, very well given. The Old Guard was a pronounced success, the scene having to be raised at the cloße of every act, and the principal artists frequently receiving the compliment of bouquets thrown upon the stage? Mr Lauri had a special call at the close of the second act. The opera will be repeated to-night.
