In the House of Lords, the Marquis of Salisbury stated that negotiations respecting the Newfoundland difficulty were in abeyance, as the rash criticism of the Government's action by the Gladstone party bad induced France to beiieve that there was no hope of securing the execution of the award of the arbitrators. The Duke of Clarence. Speeches in both Houses of Legislature were couched iv a tone of deep sympathy for the death of the Duke of Clarence, and the fact that the , Royal Family had not bid for the universal outburst of world-wide sorrow was much noted. The statement by the World that the Queen had assented to the burial of the remains of the late Duke of Clarence at Sandringham is officially denied. Irish Affairs. In the House of Commons, Mr T. Sexton has tabled a notice of motion regarding the failure of the Irish Land Purchase Act. At a meeting of the followers of Mr Justin M'Carthy, the nomination of Mr John Dillon as leader of the Irish Party was rejected. Influenza. The number of deaths from influenza reported in London for the week are 376 ; the death rate of those attacked by the epidemic is 31 per 1000. BERLIN, Fkb. 10. The German Loan. The German loan has been subscribed threefold. ST PETERSBURG, Feb. 10. The Russian FleetEleven warships are being added to the llussian Pacific squadron, and, in addition to these, the fleet will be j augmented by a number of smaller vessels. MADRID, Feb. 10. Spanish Anarchists. Four of the Xeres anarchists have been executed, and there ia consider- ■ able excitement in Spain at the death j sentence having been carried out. Bilver Coinage, The Finance Committee of the Senate has reported adversely on all the Free Silver Coinage Bills. LONDON, Feb. 10. Australian Finance. The Daily Chronicle, in attempting to reassure investors, points out that ib is impossible to effect rapid retrenchment in the Australian Colonies. Waterloo Cup. The Waterloo Cup is creating some little interest, and the nomination of Colonel North is supported at 4 to 1. Coal Porters' Btrike. The Coal Porters' Union has called out ten thousand of its members, owing to a dispute arising over the employment of one man. SYDNEY, Feb. 11. Customs Bill. On the motion that the Customs Bill do pass, several Freetraders, including Sir Henry Parkea, who made a lengthy speech, entered their final protest against the measure. Labour Bureau.
