d • £ Mrs Beattie Drowned. 6 [Special to the "Stab."] KAIKOURA. Pkb. 5. Mrs Beattie, wife o! Mr Beattie (oi Messrs Black, Beattie and Co., Christ churoh), wa9 drowned at the Hapnkt r river, seven miles north of here, about ter * o'clock this morning. The only particulari £ to hand are that Mr Beattie, having askec the Maoris if the river was cro3aable, an( being assured it was, attempted to gaii ' the Bouth side of the river, when the con 1 veyance was overturned about mid-stream > Mrs Beattie, the buggy and horseß wen Bwept out to ' sea, Mr Beattie gaining thi , Bhore. Latkb. The dead body of Mrs Beattie is see: floating in the sea fifty yards off the beach two miles south of the river. A boat is jus starting to the rescue five miles away. Th trap was nearly out of the river when th accident occurred. "When it was bein Bwept over Mr Beattie jumped dear, bt Mrs Beattie failed to do so.
