WORK AND WAGES.
CRpaoiAL to Prkbs Arsooiation.l [Received Feb. 4, at 10.20 a.m.] LONDON, Feb. 3. Two thousand more engineers have struck. The origin of the strike was a quarrel between the engineers and the plumbers relative to the division of work. Lord Salisbury, in his speech, at Exeter Hall, referring to the condition of agricultural labourers, said at present no Government could afford to propose to supplement a provision for their old age. The experiment would be very risky. Five thousand engineers and men of allied trades at Newcastle have protested against the ; lock-out, but the employers remain unmoved. MELBOUENE, Feb. 4. The unemployed difficulty is again claiming attention. It is stated that a thousand people are starving in Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne, and that hundreds are existing upon charity.
