Riot at Xeres, A gang o£ Anarchists, armed with ! fowling-pieces, attacked the town of ' Xeres in the south of Snain, and ! began to pillage it. A serious fight \ ensued, in which three were killed and twenty wounded, before the cavalry, who had come up, succeeded in dispersing the band, thirty o£ whom '' were captured. LONDON, Jan. 10. Large Defalcations. The Secretary of the Portsea Island Building Society is a defaulter. His accounts show a deficiency of .666,000. MELBOUENE, Jan. 11. Body Washed Ashore. The body of one of the crew of the schooner Templar, whioh foundered off Cape Paterson, has heen washed ashore. HOBAET, Jan. 11. Science Association. Speaking at the meeting of the Science Association, Sir Ferdinand von Mueller emphasised the importance of the proposed Antarctic expedition, and said it was important i the Colonies should seize the opportunity of replenishing their treasures by making use of the resources ! which the Antarctic regions opened up. I Professor Warren, in the course of a ! paper on the drainage of cities, expressed j the belief that the drainage of such towns ; as Sydney, Wellington, Dunedin, Auck- ! land and Hobart would be most con- i veniently and economically dealt with on ! the Shone system.
