ALLEGED CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD.
SYDNEY, Oct. 16. Mr Peter Howe, M.L.A., and Mi James Miller, formerly Directors of the Australian Mercantile Loan and Guarantee Company, who were arrested on Sept. 29, at the instance of the Crown, on a charge of conspiring to defraud in connection with the transactions of t,he Company have been committed for trial. IMPRISONMENT FOB LIFE. A man named Everard, who was accused of systematic criminal assaults on femaleß, which mystified the police for some considerable time, has been found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment for life. ! THE VICTORIAN AGENCY-GENERAL. MELBOURNE, Oct. 16. It is understood that Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Frederick Thomas Sargood, X.C.M G. will succeed Sir Graham Berry as Victorian Agent- General in London.

The bronze medal of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia has been presented to Thomas Francis Nioholls, mate onboard one of the ferry steamers running in the Auckland harbour, for having saved a man named Charles Pollsen from drowning in the harbour in April last year. Witheford that the New Zealand railways should be sold to an English syndicate was discussed last night by the Birkenhead Borough Council, which unanimously passed a resolution agreeing with the suggestion. The Tongan Government has presented a sextant to Captain Grawshaw, of the Wainui, as a recognition of his services on behalf of the trade and commerce of Tonga. ADDITION A L TEACHERS. The Board of Education has adopted an amended Bcale for the teaohing staff, inasmuch as the present staff has been found inadequate. The Bank of New Zealand shipped 69560z 15dwt, of the value of £23,876 6b Bd. RESIGNATION. DUNBDIN, Oct. 16. The Rev Mr Diggens, who a few monthß ago accepted the incumbency of Rosiyn, has received an offer of a living in England, which he has accepted, and he has sent in hia resignation. DEATH. Mr Peter Grant, late of Gowrie, a wellknown Taieri farmer, died to-day.
