-• Hugo'b Buffalo Minstbelb. — The Theatre Boyal was crowded ia every part on Saturday evening when the Buffalo Minßtrels repeated their second programme. Every song, dance and " funniment" was fully appreciated and the performers were frequently encored. The same programme will be repeated to-night. The Unemployed. — We are informed by Colonel Bailey, of the Salvation Army, that the paragraph in the Star on Saturday evening, in which it was stated that the Salvation Army officer in Danedin had I Bent twenty-five men to Chrietchurch, was incorrect. The meu were sent by Mr Parnie, of the Government Bureau in Dunedin, who, it is Baid, had wrongly | interpreted hiß orders. The Salvation Army, learning that the men were stranded in Christchurch, took them to the City Mission Home, where they were temporarily provided for. The Salvation Army has | not failed to see to the welfare of all the : men who have been sent to work through its agents, whether in companies or as individuals.

Riccakton School. — The Riccarton School Committee was very successful with the concert in aid of the prize fund on Friday evening last. Though several persons from Chrißtchureh who had promised help were unable to be present, the programme was well filled, and enthusiastically received. The glees, recitations, &c, by the children were considerably above the average in merit, and the step-dancing of "Liliput" was highly appreciated. About forty couples afterwards enjoyed a few hours' dancing to an excellent accompaniment. Hunting.— The Brackenfield hounds met at Eastcott, Waikari, last Tuesday. This meet is always well attended, a genial host and the prospect of good sport attracting all followers of the sport in the northern district. On Tuesday hares were numerous, but despite this fact, several capital runs were enjoyed. Mr Lane had caused rails to be lashed on the tops of the wire fences in many places, so that it was seldom necensary to jump bare wire. For this and for his thougbtfulness in many other ways, and for his unbounded hospitality, he earned the grateful thanks of the field. Hotels Closed.— No fewer than thirtyfour licensed houseß in thiß Colony were closed at the end of the quarter ending June 30 by various Licensing Committees. The Dunedin, Sydenhamy . and Karamea — West Coaßt— Committees, Jed ihe way in the slaughter, as they . cloaed<five public houses each. The Wa'ngantri" Committee came next, having shut' up three. The reason assigned was, in most eases, that given by the Sydenham. Committee, that the houses were not required. To this was added, in a few instances, that the lioubg had been misconducted. One or two premiaea were closed for misconduct alone. The license of one hotel, at Fatea, was not renewed because no application was made. The application in regard to another was lodged too late, and the license of a third waß not renewed because the premises had ueen burned down. Thb Electeic Lighting Bill.— A Wellington telegram says that the public meeting called by Messrs Fisher and Macdonald to consider the Electric Lighting Bill was largely attended. The conveners explained their opposition to the Bill, after which Mr De Castro, representative of the Giilcher Lighting Company, which is the Company interested, replied. The following resolution was then proposed by Mr Fisher and seconded by Mr Macdonald, and was put to the meeting by the Chairman (Mr J. Dransfield) :— " That this meeting prays that Parliament will not paBB the Wellington Electric Lighting Bill, and the Chairman be requested to forward a copy of this resolution to both Houses of Parliament." The meeting declared strongly against the resolution, but the Chairman, amid tremendous hooting and hißsing, ruled otherwise. The meeting broke up in disorder. Mobris-tubb Shooting. —On Friday evening the members of the Working Men's Club Rifle Class continued the competition for prizes presented by Messrs J. Gould, W. M. Lewis, Plaiated and Co., and R. M. Pabnbli, Sports. — The events which were postponed on account of the bad weather on Thursday, were concluded on Saturday on the Drillshed grounds. The results were as follow : — Singlehanded Bayonet Competition— ColourSergeant Phillipn (Scottish) 1, Sergeant Morrow (Scottish) 2, Private Parkes (Scottish) 3. Tilting at the Ringi— Trooper Westropp (Mounted Rifles). 18, 1 ; Trooper J. Cordner (Mounted Riflea), 9, 2 ; Troopers Un"-in and Hawkins tied for third place w i a six points each. Westropp was the only competitor who succeeded in taking off all the rings in one attempt. Rescuing Compotition — Trooj er Westropp, 58sec, 1 ; SergP'int Borland, lmin 25sec, 2; Trooper Cordr •• c, lmin 20sec, 3. Six competed, but "VV^stropp won very easily. Tent Peggine— Trooper Hawkins 1, Trooper Cookaley 2, Trooper Westropp 3. Six men competed, and Troopers Hawkins and Westropp tied no lesß than three times, Hawkins winning the final bout by twelve points to three. Major Francis, Dr Jennings and Sergeant-Major Pierce acted as judges. The attendance was small. Mutual Improvement Societies.— A meeting of the Waddington Mutual Improvement Claes was held in the Primitive Methodist Church on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance, and the Rev G. Clements presided. The evening's programme consisted of essays on " Queen Elizabeth " and " The Prophet Elistaa," contributed by Miss Sherson and Mr Sykes respectively. A good deal of criticism was called forth by the essays,, and the usual votes of thanks were passed. The usual weekly meeting of the North Belt Literary Society was held last Tuesday in the schoolroom adjoining the church. There was a large attendance, both of members and friends, the chair being occupied by the President, the Rev R. Erwm, M.A. The business of the evening consisted of a debate between delegates from the V.M.C.A. Literary Society and representatives of the home Society on the subject of •' Which iB moie conducive to the virtue aad happiness of the human race, co-operation or competition t" Messrs M'Dowall, S. E. L. Smith and W. Roxburgh, the visiting delegates, mado speeohea on the side of competition, while co-operation was upheld by the North Belt representatives, Messrs Torrance, M'Kenzie and T. Reese. The debate proved an exceedingly interesting one, and a vote was taken at the conclusion, I which resulted in favour of co-operation I by a substantial majority.
