WELLINGTON NEWS.

[FROM OUK OWN CORRKBPONDENT.] MB GKOKGE FISHER. WELLINGTON, June 4. 5 Mr George Fisher has written a. letter to the Evening Pjress, giving his platform. * You will remember that the Liberal party s declined last session to accept the Govern- , ment proposal to make him Chairman of . Committees. You will, therefore, under- , stand Mr Fisher's meaning in the folio w- ' ing excerpt from his letter to the Press. | The first part relates to the Evening Post, I and is not important in the same sense as I this is important. Mr Fisher writes : — I "Ab to myself, it is quite a mistake to j suppose that I have any claims upon the present Ministerial party. At all events, I have never urged any, and I certainly , ■ never will. The party, in quite a > gratuitous way, has put upon me . an affront, and that affront the . party will expiate. There is no non- \ sense about me in a matter of this kind. Ab to Mr M'Kcnzie's hints in regard to an appeal to the country, it is my most earnest wish that during the coming sesßion the necessity for an appeal to the country may arise. This is certain, that if another election does take place, there will be swept away certain anomalies in the Parliamentary structure which can't be swept away by any known process other than a* general election. Verb. sap. — I am, &c, Ge.oeoe Fisher." This threat of expiation has given a shock to all Liberals here, who cannot understand how a man can admit throwing over an election pledge on account of a mere party difference as to his fitness for an office of profit. Such candour is, they think, unexampled in New Zealand. THE ADDRESS-IN-REPLY. I hear it rumoured that Mr M'Quire is to move the Address-m-Keply, Mr Earnshaw probably seconding. BCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS. The following are the main features of the proposed alterations in the regulations affecting School Committee elections: — The cumulative vote is not to be revived, but votes are to be recorded at the householders' meeting, the machinery of out--1 side ballot-boxes being done away with. Resident owners and occupiers, and the father or other guardian of a child attending, whether resident or not, are to vote ; but only residents can be on the Committee. This is subject to reconsideration and revision. THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Tho Financial Statement, it ia understood, will be brought down to the House early in the session, probably next Friday week, if the debate on the AddreßS-in- Reply is concluded. [Pkb Pbbss Association.] bumoubed appointments. The Evening Press to-night states that the Government has determined to call Meßsrs W. C. Walker, W. J. M. Larnach, E. Richardson, H. Feldwick and W. Montgomery to the Legislative Council. The Premier gives an absolute denial to the statement that it is the intention of ■ the Government to call any gentlemen to the Legislative Council. GAZETTE NOTICES. A despatch from the Secretary of State for the Colonies is gazetted, stating that the Queen has been pleased to approve of Messrs Edwin Mitchelson., Thomas Fergus, t George Frederick Richardson and Thomas William Hislop being allowed to retain 1 the title of "Honourable" within the '<■ Colony of New Zealand. Mr A. R. Bloxam is gazetted Sheriff for ' Canterbury, vice Colonel Lean ; also, Mr I George Augustus Preece to be Resident Magistrate for the districts of Kaiapoi, < Christchurch, Akaroa and Kaikoura, with 1 extended jurisdiction to .£IOO. i
