Captain Moorhouse, of the Artillery, has r not resigned in consequence of any special action of the Defence Department, but "on the general ground that it is impossible to carry on the battery with the present capil tation allowance of £2. There was Borne f talk of the Battery resigning en masse, but 3 it decided not to take such an extreme step. The report that Chomis, the Kaiwarra murderer, attempted suicide in the Auckland gaol is correct. He inflicted wounds I on himself with the ordinary tin knife supplied for gaol use, and lost a pint of ' blood, but soon recovered.
