KAKANUI ENQUIRY.
• — [Per Preß3 Association.] DUNEDIN, April 7. The Kakanui enquiry has been opened before Mr Carew, with Captain Orkney as nautical assessor. Mr Haggitt conducts on behalf of the Customs, Sir Robert Stout represents the vessel's owners, Mr Hanlon the relatives of Captain Best, and Mr Fraaer the relatives of the Bhore party. Mr Carew said the scope of the enquiry was to ascertain the circumstance) under which the Kakanui proceeded t> sea, when she was last heard of, and all matters going to explain her lose. Mr Haggitt asked whether his Worship's intention was to limit the enquiry to that. His instructions were to make the enquiry as full end complete as possible. Mr Carew said that to go beyond his instructions would require a Royal Commission. He hai no wish, however, to restrict the enquiry. Mr Haggitt said it would be necessary to enquire into the condition of affairs on the island. The evidence will last some days.
