Ashburton Tennis Club. — The Ashburton Tennis Club opened their tournament on Saturday, when four matches were played. Mrs Bees and Mrs Leahy provided afternoon tea, and the pleasant weather attracted a large number of visitors. The first game was between Messrs Polhill and Watson, and was won by the latter after a very exciting finish. The next game, between Messrs Buchanan and Paterson, was won easily by the former, the handicappcr having treated him rather well. Ross, who had 5 points start of Peter, won by 7 points. The last game, Denshire against Curtis, was very even throughout, Curtis ultimately winning by 15 points, the amount of his handioap. There are two more games to be played to finish the first round, and the finals will probably be decided on Saturday.
