Rangiora Borough Council, MONTHLY MEETING.

I The monthly meeting of the above Council was held last night ; present — His Worship tho Mayor, and Councillors Blackett, Sans-im, Cone, Ivory, Wright and Jennings. Apology was made for the absence o£ Councillors Srephena and Keir. COHRESrONDENCE. The following wafa dealt with : — Prom the Town Clerk, Ashbur ton, giving information respecting the town clock recently provided at Ashburton. From Mr Kobert Murray, maker of the^J clock, placing his services at the disposal (Jor the Council. From Messrs Little-john and Son, watch> makers, Wellington, asking for particulars, respecting tho clock required by thd Council. Tha Clerk was instructed to furnish the EHine. From the Ko-sideni Enginoor of Railways giving perm is, ion for asphalting to bo laid up to the eucL of the sleepers ac tho High street railway crossing. From the anxne, acknowledging receipt of tho Council's application for compensation for daoiugo done to the Maria Andrews Park, and ttat.ing that the matter would be referred to headquarters. The Mayor reported that the damage had been assessed at JE295, and a claim for that amount had been made. He stated further that Mr Burnett, Resident Engineer of Railways, had inspected the Park. From the Borough Poundkeeper, asking to have certain repairs done to the pound. Kef erred to the Works Committee. From tho Superintendent of Telegraphs, stating that the application for a telephone between Eangiora and Christchurch could not be entertained. From the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, stating that the fire well in Victoria ttreet, near the Catholic Church, had failed when tested with the steam-engine. The Fire Prevention Coirur.ttee were instructed to have the well deepened at once. From the Mandeville and Rangnra Road Board, to the effect that tluy cjuld not cooperate with the Council in respect to enforcing thu Slaughterhouse Act. LICIT! ING. The Lighting Committee recommended that Mr D. M'Kay's tender for new lampheads be accepted, and also thai; six new lampposts b« obtained from Messrs Scott Bros, at once. They also cuggested that the Council provide the lamp-glasses for six monthß as a trial. It was resolved to obtain specimen lampa from Messrs M'Kay and Dunkley at their respective tender prices, viz., £1 12 b and £1 15s, before accepting a tender. The recommendation with regard to the lampglasses was adopted. FINANCIAL, The receipts for the month were £Q7 10a sd, and the bank overdraft was reported to bo .£SO 53 7d. Accounts, Mi 9s lid, were passed for payment. At the suggestion of Councillor Ivory, the Clerk was instructed to ascertain from other Councils whether thoir workmen receive wanes for holidays other than Christmas Day and Good Friday; the practice of this Council having hitherto been to pay the daymen for all public holidays. BARBED WIRE. It wao resolved to request the owner of v section in Good etreet, and the owner of >nein Albert street, to remove barbed wire :rom fences beside the footpaths. After instructing tho Clerk to prepare ;he new valuation roll, the Council idjourned.__ The Avon Steahee.— The efforts to raise the sunken steamer were yesterday crowned with, success. At low tide two sets of shear-legs were put on the seaward dde of the boat, and she waß got on a ■airly even keel. The manual fire engine Tom the Chester street station, in charge )f Lieutenant Smith, was thon used to jump the wat<r out of the hold. This laying been dono she floated with the rising tide.
