AUCKLAND, Jan. 6.

The eighth annual session of the Educational lu3tit;ute commenced here this morning. There was a large attendance, including representatives from the southern branch. Mr Harrison, the President, in his opening address, repelled the , charge of godlesf.ness mado against the j system. He referred to the number |of the authorities trying to tell | teachers their business, but supported local I Government. He pointed to America's | attitude regarding the cost of education, to show that New Zealand is not paying too much. He advocated the abolition of 1 the pupil teacher system, and the establishment of training institutions, also recommended that the functions of the inspectors should be revised and enlarged, witb a view more to inspection than examination. The addres-s was warmly commended. Committees were appointed to deal with various subjects, and an adjournment was made till to-morrow. The representatives will be entertained at a conversazione by their professional brethren this evening.
