GREAT FIRES.
Four Thousand Sheep Burned. A Township in Danger. [Special to Peess Association.] SYDNEY. Oct. 17. The Hoddenrig shearing station, at Nevertire, one of the finest in the Colony, has been destroyed by fire. Pour thousand sheep perished in the flames, and it is estimated that the loss is fully .£13,000. Incendiarism is suspected, as the owner of the station is shearing with free labour. Tremendous bush fires are raging at Lismore, an agricultural district situated on the North arm of the Richmond river, about 520 miles North of Sydney. Vast tracts of territory have been devastated, and the township of Clunea is in danger. 1 The inhabitants of the last-mentioned I place are out fighting the flames. i At the inquest into the extensive fire which broke out on the premises of Messrs Gibbs, Shallard and Company on Oct. 1, the Superintendent of Fire Brigades, in his evidence, expressed the opinion that the present water-mains in the city were inadequate to cope with any serious fire. Unlesß the water authorities shortly obtain a supply of coal, they will be compelled to cut off the water supply to the high levels of the city.
