THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.
•* [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. Mr George Aldridge has decided that he will not stand for Newton. There is no candidate in the field for that seat. Mr W. F. Buekland addressed the electora of Manukau ab Otahuhu, and received a vote of confidence. He said it was unfortunate that he would oppose Sir M. O'Borke, but the action of southern papers in referring to Mr Lawry's resolve Dot to content Manukau as self-sacrifice was due to policy, because the North lost votes when one of their members acted as Speaker and another as Chairman of Committees. Mr Buekland opposed further "borrowing, and advocated retrenchment and settlement of the land. He would like to see the Property tax done away with, but would not rush after a fanciful Land tax. At the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, the coming elections were considered. Air E. Withy moved— "That, in the opinion of this Chamber, further economy in administering the affairs of the Colony is necessary, and that the system of supplementing the income out of borrowed money for ordinary expenditure should cease." He advocated further retrenchment, and said a stoppage of borrowing was absolutely necessary to improve their position. Mr Morton seconded the motion, which was agreed to. A resolution was also carried, affirming the opinion that an increase of taxation would be most objectionable, and the resumption of borrowing very undesirable.
