A DISASTROUS FIRE.
DESTRUCTION OF A TOWN, [Bpkciai. to Pbess Association.] NEW YORK, Sept. 25. News has been received from Central America that the town of Colon, on the Isthmus of Panama, has' been almost totally destroyed by fire. I Colon, or Aspinwall, is a seaport on the Atlantic side of the Isthmus of Panama, forty-seven miles from Panama, 2000 miles from New York, and nearly equidistant from San Francisco and Valparaiso, being about 3300 miles from each place. The harbour haa a depth of water sufficient for the largest Bbips and is very spacious. It has semi-monthly communication with both New York and San Francisco by steamers. British, French and German mail steamers have a landing here, and also at Ponami, the mail being transported across the Isthmus at this point. A railroad, forty-seven miles in length, connecting Aspinwall with Panama, wa3 opened on Feb. 17, 1855. A track communicates with the wharf at which the steamers load. Aspinwall exports very fine bananas. It was founded about 1850 and is said to contain 2500 inhabitants.
