-♦ CHRISTCHUBCH. This Day. (Before E. Westenra, G. T. Booth and NY K. Bowden, Esqs.) The Bicycle Nuisance.— Charles Hunt, A. E. North and Henry Stevens were fined 5s for riding bicycles on the footpaths. Alleged Assault. — Annie Malcolmson and Eva Watson were charged with assaulting Sarah Ward. Mr Leatham appeared for complainant, Mr Hoban for the defence. The evidence of complainant showed that the accused came to her house and knocked at thedoor, and when Ward opened it they came in. Watson seized her, and Malcolmson hit her on the back of the head with a bottle. The evidence of an independent witness, Samuel Wright, and that of a girl named Sarah Keene was taken. The case was dismissed as against Wat- ' son, and Malcolmson was fined ten shillings, coats, and solicitor's fee. Prohibited. — William Scott, on the application of his son, was placed under : the provisions of the Prohibition Act,, with regard to Christchurch and the surrounding districts. i Alleged Lakceny. — William Manders and Henry Ernest Perry admitted stealing a quantity of beef, mutton, sausages and lard, valued at 10s, from the shop of Mr W. H. Cooper, butcher. Several previous . convictions were proved against the youngmen, and the police reported that they were living in brothels. They were sentenced to three months' hard labour each.
1 Ethical Society.— The meeting of the Christian Ethical Society in the Caledonian, Booms last night was largely attended Mr Hare presided. The Eev J. O'Bryen Hoare read a paper on George Meredith's study of woman. Mr Allison read a paper on two articles by Herbert Spencer on justice. Each paper -was followed by an interesting discussion.
