THEATRE ROYAL.
"CHUMS." The St Maur Comedy Company opened at the Theatre Royal yesterday evening in David Christie Murray's comedy-drama Chums. The plot of the play is entirely laid in New Zealand. Chums ia unlike almost all Colonially-written plays that have been produced here, in that there is an entire absence of exaggerated effort at plot, and a reality in its bright conception that must make it a general and warm favourite. It is written in that happy Bfcyle of which the author has shown such a mastery in his novels, and last night earned himahearty "call," and prolonged applause. The audience was a highly appreciative one. The fact that a large amount of mail, parliamentary _ and general matter has imperative claims on our columns in this issue prevents our giving a detailed notice of the play. A lengthy description of the j story has, however, already been published | It may be said that the play has been well mounted ; very pretty scenery by Mr Neville Thornton was used for the first time last night. Plot and players were heartily applauded, the principals were recalled, and an enthusiastic call for the I author brought Mr D. Christie Murray to • the front to bow his thanks. Chums i should assuredly become a strong favourite ; here. It will be repeated to-night. =====
