SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

This Council met last nigh.; present — The Mayor, Councillors Forrester, Smith, T. E. Taylor, Hopper, and Brown. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor R. M. Taylor during the Bessicn of Parliament, and to Councillors White, Gledhill, and Jacques for the meeting. COBB-BPONDBNCE. The following waa dealt with : — A circular waa received from the Secretary of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, drawing attention to a resolution of that body respecting the price paid to contractors for work done. Received. From Mr W. Langdown, the representative of the Borough on the Hospital Board, asking the Council's opinion re bringing the Contagious Diseases Act into force, with a view to guiding him should the matter come up for discussion at the Hospital Board. On the motion of Councillor T. E. Taylor, a unanimous expression o£ opinion wake given in favour of the Act being brought into operation. THE AVON. The Mayor was appointed a delegate to the Conference at the City Council Chamber to discuss the question of dredging the river. WOBKB COMMITTEE. This Committee reported : — (1) Tenders for the supply of broken metal are upon the Council table ; the Committee recommends the acceptance of the tender of the Halswell Quarry Company for the supply of 200 yds at 6s 6d, and that of Mr Whittington for 200 yds at 5s 6d, and 100 yds at Ss ld per yard. (2) The Committee recommends that the petition of W. Dalley and others for the erection of a lamp at the corner of Ruskin and Barrie streets he granted. (3) The Committee recommends that notice be given to the owner or occupier of the property at the corner of Crescent road and the "West side of Selwyn street, requiring him, in accordance with section No. 261 of "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1836," to erect a close and substantial fence to fence the property from the street. (4) The Committee also suggests that the attention of the Drainage Board be directed to the necessity for clearing out Jackson's creek. (S) Notice has been given to the Tramway Company to repair the tramway lines. The Committee purposes doing the work if the notice is not promptly complied with. The report was adopted. FINANCIAL. The Finance Committee reported receipts since last meeting at JBBB9 3s 4d. The balance of accounts was: Separate account, credit, .£176 8s _d; interest account, credit, .£360 18s lOd; loan account, credit, .£7375 5b lld; general account, debit, J. 209 17s 2d. They recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £187 16s lOd. The report was adopted. WALTHAM LIBEABT. Councillor T. E. Taylor read a report with regard to the Waltham Library, in which the Committee recommended that the Governor's assent be obtained to .the removal of the building formerly used; as a library from its present site to a central site in Colombo road. . The building wain a good state, but the books were getting mouldy for want of use. Tf it were moved to a central site it could be made a valuable property, and the removal would' oni j cost about .£2O, The report was adopted. DAT LABOUB. Councillor T. E. Taylor moved— "Thai after the date of passing this resolution, all special and ordinary works within the Borough be done by day labour under the supervision of the Council's officers." Ii doing so, he referred to the unsatisfactory way in which many of the contracts hae been done in consequence of their being taken at too low a rate by contractors* Councillor Brown seconded the motion but after some discussion it was decided U postpone the further consideration of it till next meeting. The meeting then adjourned. .
