RUGBY MATCHES.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. Matches for the Senior Championship were continued on Saturday. At the North Park Merivale and Sydenham played a good match, which resulted in a win for the former by two goals and a try to nil', at Lancaster Park a very even and desperately-fought game between East Christchurch and Canterbury College ended in a draw; at Christ's College, Christchurch defeated the Collegianß by thirty points to one. The matches are now drawing to a close; Merivale, who have three morn to play, must win the championship unless something approaching a miracle intervenes. As will be seen by the subjoined table, Merivale have a strong lead, while there is every prospect of a close finish for second honours.

Details of Saturday's matches are as follow :— CANTERBURY COLLEGE v. EAST CHRISTCHUKCH. At Lancaster Park, the meeting of Canterbury College and East Christchurch produced one of the best expositions of football which has been given this season. Both teams mustered strongly, but, unfortunately, their ranks suffered from accidents during the game, the oonteatants numbering fourteen a side only when the second spell was commenced. Forbes, one of the mainstays of the Easterns' back department, was disabled during the first ten minutes, an injury to his ankle being responsible for his very early and unfortunate retirement. Garrard was the College victim, a serious wrench to his shoulder robbing his team of the services usually so valuable to them. The game waa contested in excellent spirit, but it must be noted that the duties of the Referee were rendered more than usually arduous from the fact that he apparently received but little practical assistance from the gentlemen officiating with the flags. The match was drawn, not a single point bein£ registered, and it may safely be said that thia result well represents the merits of the play*
