In the House of .Eepresentatives there came a string of Bills .of a delightfully miscellaneous j character, introduced by the Government, \ Mr Joyce and others. The Houbo j made graceful and grateful acknowledg- j ment of the services rendered by Major j Campbell aa Clerk of Parliament during I the long period of thirty-five years, and then came the Address in Reply and — a fiasco. Mr Tanner, the mover, could not make a speech because he was unwell ; Mr Bobs, the seconder, could not make a speech because he thought the other man would leave him nothing to say. Whereupon Mr Ballance moved the adjournment 1 of the debate till the evening, and at 7.30 1 proceeded to criticise the Ministry, and to I point out their sins of omission and commission, whereof he made a long catalogue. The ;Hoa T. W. Hielop Bpoke in part

Pbbbbleton. — A special meeting of ;the District School Committee was held on Tuesday evening ; present — Messrs Patchett (Chairman), Mills, Hodgen, Fergan and Gallagher. Since the election of the new Committee there has been a noticeable improvement in the buildings and Bchool grounds. The master reports that the attendance of scholars during the past two months, in consequenco of " la grippe" find potato picking has been very unsatisfactory. The Chairman was requested to write to several of the parents, urging the necessity of more regular attendance, in order to obtain something like good results at the nest examination. It was also decided to give the scholars prizes on Wednesday evening, July 2, , when there will be an entertainment. The master placed on the table the books containing the work done by a number of the children for the Exhibition at Dunedin, which the Committee considered praise- : worthy, as showing clean and careful work ; done in the standards represented. t Entertainment at Lyttelton. — The ! Lyttelton Oddfellows' Hall was crowded '. on Thursday evening, when the Victoria ! Minstrels gave one of their ever-popular \ entertainments, the proceeds of which went '■ to the uniform fund of the Garrison Band. j The programme opened with the chorus ! " Twilight on the Sea," by the company, ! and was, like all the choruses of the j evening, very nicely rendered. Songs ; were contributed by Misses M. and K. | Williams, Messrs J. T. Gifford, E. Wells. i R. A. Borrows, R. Anty, and J. H. Collins, j the last two being comic. All these wero t rendered in fine style, end encores were the order of the evening. The second part was very varied, and consisted of songs, a stump speech, a duet, a. sailor's hornpipe and sand jig, the whole concluding with the farce, " The Quarrelsome Servants." | The items calling for special mention in j the second part were the stump speech by j Mr W. J. Gil more, who kept the audience •. amused for some time, and the rendering of the duet " Very Improper Indeed," by Miss M. Williams and Mr G. E. Collins. Altogether the concert was most successful, and added one more to the many pleasant evenings provided for the public of Lyttelton by the Viotoria Minstrels. Thb Gallant Six Hundred Entertainment. — The attractions at the theatre this evening will be many. Besides the views and concert already announced, the Scottish pipers will, after playing a march, dance a Highland reel. During the interval, Mr Francis James Tyler, formerly of the 4th Dragoon Guardß, who "rode so well " in that fearful charge, and is one of the now few Burvivors, will appear on the Btage and relate in his own plain, homely fashion, his recollections of that terrific quarter-of-an-hour, in which over two hundred of his comrades were mowed down by shot and shell.
