WELLINGTON NEWS.

£fbom otxb special cobbispondbnt.] WELLINGTON, June 21. To-day, I hear Mr Levin's name mentioned in the lobbies as a probable appointment to the Upper House. This morning the proprietor of the j New Zealand Times takes leave of his readers in a valedictory article, in which he severs his ten years' connection with the paper he took over from the New Zealand Times Company, and hopes that his successor may get that support which the public denied to himself. It is as dignified and well written a valedictory article as one could wish to see. The 'Frisco service is the objeot of gossip. Government, it seems, rely on two trump cards for the game of cheap ocean postage. The first is the American subsidy, which will give the public the 2£d postage through the San Francisco service; the other is some arrangement which is on the tapis with the direct steam Companies, but not known outside. There is no change to report m the political situation. The., idea is still general that Sir George Grey will be beaten and the real battle be fought on the Financial Statement. Mr Bryce is, I understand, strongly opposed to some of the items in the programme, and is anxious to make a strong speech, against them. This is an important sign of the coming event.
