The i _ea is novel, and the entertainment should attract a large audience. Thb Batsamox Shield. — Messre Coates, and Co., of Colombo Btreet, have completed a very handsome silver challenge shield to the order of tho committee representing the late First Canterbury Battalion. The shield ia of plain burnished sterling silver, surrounded by a wreath of laurel entwined with a scroll bearing the names of the different oorps of the battalion. At the summit of the shield is the battalion badge :in hobnail facet work. Above this is a silver scroll bearing the words, "First Battalion Canterbury Rifle Volunteers." This is supported by two pairs of crossed swords and Martini-Henry rifles, and above all is a really beautifully worked miniature model of a rifleman's helmet. The work has been most carefully, executed, down to such minute details as, the chain on tho helmet, and the 'sights, on the rifleß. The centre of the shield, sofr apart for the names of the winningcorps, bears that of the " Christ College JEM-as," the first winners, who may weli bo, n^ojud of. tb,eir handsome ttropby.
