Eablt Closing Association.— A meeting of the Committee of the N.Z. Early Closing Association was held at the V.M.C.A. rooms last evening, the Eev T. Flavell presiding. A deputation was appointed to wait on the editors of the Lyttelton Times and Press, and thank them for the able assistance rendered to the cause the Association had at heart. Great satisfaction was expressed at the action of • the Grocers' Association in deciding to < close at 6 p.m. on Saturdays. It was re- ; solved that all the tradesmen in the i city should be canvassed, and requested i to make six o'clock closing on Saturdays ' general, as far as possible. A vote of indignation was passed against those persons : who had coupled the Secretary's name and i that of the Association with the disturb- ' ances that had recently occurred on Satur- 1 day nights, as neither the Association nor < its officers had anything to do with the i matter. It was resolved to have a concert i on Saturday, May 3, the first evening of i Saturday 6 p.m. closing. A letter was I < received from Dr Frankieh, expressing ! strong sympathy with the movement, and j < stating that he considered late closing ' '. detrimental not only to the shop assistants, i ' but also to the community. The Commit- { : tee then adjourned. |]
