■• CHRISTCHUKCH. This Day. (Before E. Westenra and B. H. Wood, Esus.) Drunkenness. — A first offender waa fined 5s. — Elizabeth Wigg wii-i lined £2, or in delimit seven dav_' imprisonment. Vagkancy. — Michael JPognrty was charged with having no lawful visible means of tupport. JMr Weston appeared for accused. Detective Neill deposed to the fi-.cc that accused was living at a brothel, aud following drunken men with a view of robbiug themOhief Detective O'Connor handed in a list of previous convictions agaiust accused,, who, he stated, had no means of sustenance, and lived "on tho proceeds of a woman's prostitution. The police in other parts of the Colony had frequently complained of his conduct elsewhere. Sergeant Brings aud Constable Dillon also gavo testimony as to the bad character of the accused, and the fact that he lived on prostitution. The Bench considered the offence proved, and sentenced accused to six months' imprisonment. Fougery. — On the cases brought against James Rolmes, principal Warder O'Connell again appeared, and stated that Holmes waß Btill Buffering f'rem the effects of influenza, and handed iv a medical certificate to that effect. The Bench remanded the case indefinitely, accused to be brought up when sufficiently recovered. Lakcenx. — Hiihael Kyan and Thomas Laming were charged with stealing five hams, value .£l l2s, the property of Thomas, Stafford, of Styx. Mr Weston aispc-ared for the accused. Mr Pender said the case against the accused was clear, but there \va3 another mau implicated, and hewould have to ask for a remand. Chief Detective O'Connor gavo some particulars as to the finding of some ham cloths, &c. The hams had not yet been found, but from the marks on tho cloths it wasevident they had been taken out of them and probably sold. Mr l .\'e_ton raised no objection to the remand, which was granted for seven days, tho accused to bo brought up before if the third accused could be found. Assault. — Ellen Oakes was charged by Catherine Grainger with assaulting her little girl Margaret, aged ten. Mr Beattie appeared for the complainant. The evidence of the complainant and Eeveral witnesseß showed that there had been an old-standing feud between the parties, and that it had. culminated on April 12 by Mrs Oakes catching the girl Grainger and rapping her head againat the fence. Defendant waß fined ss, and ordered to pay the costa of the Court, lis, and solicitor's fee. — A. charge brought by George Tibbs against a boy named Augus Black ior striking his. son Henry Tibbs was dismissed, as provocation was proved. Both lads were cautioned not to provoke any further assault. (Before B. Beetham, Esq., R.lt.) Civil Cases. — Church Property Trustees v. Thomas Johnston, tor possession of tenement. Mr Beswick, for plaintiffs, obtained an order for possession ou May 20. —Liquidators Hobday's Co-pperative Store Company v. F. Meadows, claim £& 17s. Mr Cresswoll for defendant. Henry Thomson swore that Meadows was at one time clerk to tho Company, and the amount due was for a suit of clothes supplied to his cousin, P. G. Meadows. The amount was debited to defendant's account in the ledger by defendant himself. The amount was later credited to the account by defendant with the note "amount due by F. G. Meadows." Defendant now said plaintiffs had their remedy against th» cousin. To Mr Cresswell: Hobday said he would not trust the cousin. Did not know that the amount waa first charged to the cousin. Defendant may have said when spoken to about the entry that it was made on the representation of Mr Hobday, after the good 3 had been originally debited to P. G. Meadows. Could not trace the original entry. Mr Cresswell said he was prepared to prove the line he had taken in crossexamination, that there was no consideration at the time for the guarantee. He quoted cases, and obtained judgment for defendant with cost 3.
