WANGANUI, Feb. 27.

There is fine weather and splendid water for the regatta to-day, and a fair attendance.

Maiden Fours (in-rig) — First prize, .£8 ; second, £2. Union Boat Club (Wanganui), 1 and 2 ; Wanganui Rowing Club, 3 ; Star (Wellington), 4 ; Wellington Rowing Club last.

Won by three lengths. Senior Fours (in-rig)— Wellington Rowing Club, 1; Union Boat Club, 2; Wanganui Rowing Club, 3. Won easily by a dozen lengths. Wanganui were second, but went inside a flag. Collegiate School v. Wanganui Rowing Club. — Won by the school by six lengths.

David Chbistie Mtjbray. — Thiß talented noveli&t, the author of such charming work 3 as "Aunt Eachel," " Fiwt Person Singular" and "Joseph's Coat," i 3 at present spending a few days in Christchurch. Mr Murray is staying at Coker's Hotel, and will remain here for the next eight or ten days. At present he has made no arrangements to lecture in Christchurch, but may. do so should sufficient inducement offer. Mr Murray, on leaving Christchurch, proceeds northwards to Wellington and Auckland, to complete ! his round of the principal centres of population in the Colony, of which he appearßto hold a high opinion. An interview with Mr Murray, by our special reporter, will be found in another column. Lyttelton BoEOuaH Council.— An election for a person to fill the vacancy on the Lyttelton Borough Council caused by the resignation of Councillor Holland, was held yesterday. There were four candidates, viz., Messrs H. M'Lellan, W. Cook, W. Holmes and J. Thompson. There was ■very little interest taken in the proceedings, and only about twenty persons assembled tohear the Ke turning Officer, Mr H. J. V. Eogers, declare the result, which was as follows :— John Thompson 101, H. M'Lellan 92, W. Cook 54, and W. Holmes 15. J. Thompson was declared duly elected. There were fifteen informal votes.
