(Before C. Whitefoord, Esq., R.M., and E. Westenra, Esq.) Alleged Larceny.— J onn Powell was charged witn stealing a side of bacon, value 10_, from Albert Shaw, on Peb. 24, at Christchurch. Accuted pleaded "Wot guilty." Sergeant-major M'Donald, for the police, applied ior a, remand until Peb. 28. Albert Shaw, proprietor of the Royal Hotel, said that accused was in his employ, and had access to the kitchen. Oa Monday night witness mißued the bacon, and accused, when charged wth the theft, said he knew the man who had taken it, and would bring it back. H& did not do so. Constable Dillon said he was called to the hotel to enquire about tbe loss of the bacon. Was tolu that Powell was to be bauk in an hour. He did not return, so witness went to a house in Peterborough street, where he found accused with another man and woman. Accused in answer to questions snid hiß name was Jones, and that he had been away grass-seeding, and knew nothing about the affair. Witness then arrested him. The retuaud was granted as requested, and bail was fixed iv one surety of £25. Obscene axd Threatening Language. — Thomas Cusdin was charged with using obscene language in Manchester Btreet', and with nsjn~ thre-.ten.ip_i an 4 &h«B<ve language to Ploreuee Goldo.oue. Several witnesses swore that defendant came into the hotel kept by complainant's husband, and abu.ed tbem about a C-Jurt CP.se between them, stating that Goldstone had not returned some tools belonging to him, as ordered by the Court. Cusdin, according to one of the witnesEes, was Been on the pavement using bad language, and with his face covered with blood. Cuediu was fined 403 on the second charge, aud ordered to find one surety of .£25 to keep the peace towards the complainant, i Obdeb Madb. — Franklyn Hodges waß , charged with being the rather of the illei gitimate child ot Ali.e Edwards. Mr Leatham for complainant ; Mr Stiinger for defendant. Tlie paternity of the child was not denied by defendant, who had paid 8s a week in support of the child for the past two years. Complainant believed , that defendant was leaving the district, and defendant asked that ilie amount of the payment might be reduced. The Bench made the order 7s per week, with the , usual costs. Tradb Jealousy. — William Eurcombe was charged with using threatening language to Tnomas Vojce. Mr Beattiw for complainant, Mr Leatham for defendant. The parties to tbe case occupied adjaoent shops, and while defendant Had threatened to •' smash complainant up," complainant, it appeared, had made _neeriag remarks about tho stock in defendant* shop. Tho Bench administered a Btrong caution to each side, dismissing the case, each party to pay its own costs.
